Careers:Pharmacy Technicians

Description:

Our Pharmacy Technician program provides both the theoretical and practical skills required to advance towards becoming a Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT). As a newly regulated profession with a greater scope of practice, pharmacy technicians play an integral role in the pharmacy practice environment in both hospital and community pharmacies. Under this new profession, technicians take on more responsibility for the technical components of dispensing within the pharmacy, allowing pharmacists to provide more comprehensive patient care services.

Upon graduation, students are eligible to complete Structured Practical Training, the Ontario College of Pharmacy Jurisprudence exam, and the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada qualifying exam for pharmacy technicians.

Our curriculum is based on the competencies and outcomes set by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) and Canadian Pharmacy Technician Educators Association (CPTEA). CTS Canadian Career College is very pleased to announce our Pharmacy Technician Program has been awarded the status of Provisional Accreditation by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs for its North Bay, Barrie and Sudbury campuses for a three year term (2009-2012).

Each of our three campuses offering the program has a simulated lab environment with workstations that allow for students to perform skills and competencies in a safe manner. The program provides students with extensive hands-on training in these simulated lab environments. Students gain knowledge in pharmaceutical and medical terminology, pharmaceutical and sterile calculations used in prescribing and dispensing of medications, as well as the computer skills necessary in pharmacy practice. Practicing pharmacists and other industry-related professionals are consulted so as to ensure our program meets the highest educational standards available in the industry today. Each instructor possesses specific education and experience in the courses they teach.

The Pharmacy Technician program has 300 hours of placement that comprises 150 hours in a community environment and 150 hours in a hospital setting. This placement is a mandatory component of the program.
